When The Lights Go Out

Session 3
Less Sarcasm than before, and yet, more

Today a new player joined the group, playing the Magical Diagnostician Dr Mause. Three guesses who he’s based on. Anyway, the good Doctor is investigating the reason for the sun going out, and has little patience for the group’s shenanigans. Our friendly Pseudodragon introduces himself, and offers the services of the rest of the party for helping investigate. The Doctor sends the group to investigate a church of Wee Jas while he investigates a cult of Zarus. In the end, the cult is deemed to be strange yet uninvolved and his assistants are deemed to be morons. The doctor investigates a Church of Pelor and the Church of Wee Jas by himself, with the aid of the Pseudodragon. Towards the end of the evening, he is disappointed by the lack of leads and reports to the Governor, who informs him of another cult, this one of Vecna that meets nearby, which he promptly goes out to investigate. He finds nothing still.

The next day, the others continue to work in the caverns while the doctor and the pseudodragon go to the main Church of Pelor and get the HIgh Priest to summon a Planar Ally (Lesser) of Pelor for information. This results in learning that it’s likely an entity of the Far Realm doing the draining of all suns everywhere. They report to the Governor and proceed to the cavern to meet up with the others and do some exploring.

Session 2
In Which Sarcasm Continues To Flow

This session started with the group spending a week on their various activities. The Gnome spent the week building and selling items, the Halfling spent it trying to recruit people to explore the Underdark, but found remarkably little in the way of interest. At the end of the week, the sun was noticeably dimmer, and the group, minus the Half-Elemental, whose player was switching characters, went to visit the Governor, believing that they were not indispensable and necessary to the continued existence of the city, to try to extort some money out of him. This went about as well as would be expected, given that the guy is the governor of a decent sized city, and has many other adventurers to draw upon and send out in missions for the city. He was quite sarcastic about it, and sent the group down to the Cavern to help with the exploring and illuminating. They decided that since they were down a man, they should recruit some extra help and picked up a Druid (Temporary Player).
So, off they went.
They met up with the commander of the expeditionary force, a Human named John. He gave them a bundle of Everburning Torches and sent them out to illuminate the cavern. While doing so, they came across a Tendriculos, and with some difficulty, managed to kill it. Proceeding to the end of their bundle of torches, the party encountered an Undead Dwarf, who greeted them jovially and engaged them in a discussion about what had happened to a few of his pets that he had been keeping in this cavern (the Monstrous Centipedes) The party hemmed and hawed for a bit, before denying all knowledge of them, at which point the Dwarf revealed that the homunculus had been his and he knew what had happened and was messing with them. At this point, they decided that the best course of action was to try to kill him, though the most keened eyed among them noticed that there were a couple of plate like things — maybe pies? — scattered around the area. They beat the Dwarf down, with his being amused and not really reacting other than throwing a few magical pies at the party members except for when he was low on health, at which point he broke a pie that exploded in a fireball, triggering another pie that healed him. This continued, the party beating him down, him triggering a fireball again, and healing up to full. The player of the Half-Elemental introduced his new character, a Warforged who introduced himself with a spear to the gut of the Dwarf. When the dwarf got too low in regards to health, he paused to talk to the group, saying that had amused him sufficiently that he would allow them to replace his pets that they had killed and would be keeping an eye on them. He then handed over a pie that they could use to heal their most injured member, as the Halfling had been grievously injured by a quartet of Bearded Devils that had been summoned by pies. The Dwarf then vanished, and the group went back to John to report the Dwarf’s presence and get some more torches. This is where we ended.

Session 1
In Which Sarcasm Flows Freely

After a time of character building, we began. The party ended up consisting of a Gnome, a Halfling, a Half-Elemental and a Pseudodragon. The pseudodragon was stripped of its darkvision for the campaign, due to thematic concerns.


The party started in a meeting with the Governor and the High Priest of Pelor. They were being commissioned to find a place for the city to relocate to, should the prophecy come true. Talk of said prophecy was met with scoffing and sarcasm, and when the Priest mentioned that he wasn’t receiving spells reliably from Pelor, he was met with sarcasm about how he wasn’t a very good priest. This resulted in some raised eyebrows, but no real repercussions. There was some attempted negotiations at higher pay, which didn’t pan out very well, and a demand for horses and a carriage.

They received toy horses and a toy carriage. They were not pleased. Said Half-Elemental melted the toys with fire. They then proceeded outside to find a single horse and a cart, which they took to the nearby mountain instead of walking because they’re lazy buggers.

So, the proceeded to the mountain and after about an hour of climbing, they found a cave entrance with a dire bear eating a carcass inside. Said dire bear ignored them until they got too close to its meal, at which point it reacted in a hostile fashion. They slaughtered the bear and set its corpse on fire out of spite. They then proceeded deeper into the mountain, where they found themselves in a maze-like series of caverns and tunnels, with the occasional creature or swarm.

After deciding to always go right they circled through the caverns and eventually found themselves in a room with a homunculus tapping on a shield with a hammer. After trying to communicate with it without realizing that it can’t speak, they took the shield away from it, and it flew away. The Pseudodragon followed it until it reached a cavern with a troglodyte in it, then returned to the group.

They killed the troglodyte.

Eventually, their method of always taking rights led them to an exit that sloped steeply down further into the mountain, and in following it, they reached an enormous cavern — easily large enough to hold a city three times as large as Schollen, though it was only through walking around that they realized that, as their lights weren’t powerful enough to reach very far. On the bright side (heh), their lights did attract some attention, and a gargantuan Monstrous Centipede came out of the darkness to try to eat them. They killed it. And then yelled ‘Hello’, further attracting the attention of more monstrous centipedes — Two gargantuan and on colossal. Though it was difficult, they survived the encounter extremely wounded. After patching themselves up, they returned to the town and reported in. They received their pay, and went about town to spend it and waste some time.

Meanwhile, the sun was dimming slightly every day — not enough to notice yet, but in a few days…

Pre Game Thoughts
Just Becuase

So, this is starting today.

The campaign is going to be beginning with the group assembling before the Governor of Schollen and a High Priest of Pelor stationed in Schollen. They are being sent on an assignment that must be kept quiet, so as to not cause a panic, should the worst come to pass. It seems that the Priest has felt his connection to his god diminish and worries that an ancient prophecy is coming to pass. Should it come true, then the world will become a barren, inhospitable place with no natural light, and humans, currently the race in power, will lose their grip on the world to the likes of dwarves and orcs, who can see in the dark. For this reason, the Governor & the Priest are sending parties out to find a place where the city can relocate to should this prophecy come true.

There are some requirements that make this a difficult task, and the party is but one of several being sent to a nearby mountain to scout for ancient ruins that might indicate a dwarven settlement was once there, or for a passage to the Underdark, as underground seems to be the best place to hide when the surface freezes and every light you have potentially betrays your location to an enemy.

In terms of crunch, the party is starting out at the respectable level of 7, the campaign is Gestalt, and races with Darkvision are being disallowed. Worshipping Pelor is allowed, though not suggested for divine casting classes that derive power from deities. No books are being disallowed. Should be interesting.

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.
